Car Crash - Devlog #4

DevLog #4 - Car Crash 🚗💥

Hello Coders! 👾

Welcome back to the next devlog of my game Car Crash! The current lesson in my game development course didn’t fit the game as much as I hoped, but I did manage to get some things done this week.

🚖 Traffic Time

One of the things that should help make this game progressively harder is the intersections. I’ve added cars that navigate through the crossroads. The cars have a simple script that just drives them forward. Because they are parented to the road section means that they are cleaned up automatically when the player has passed them. They also cast a small ray in front of them to slow down when there’s another obstacle in the way. This way, when the player hits a car in the intersection and they both stop, other cars behind them slow down and stop before crashing into them. You’ll find that dodging cars and timing your moves across the intersection adds a whole new level of excitement to your high-speed getaway.

🏢 Urban Uprising

Gone are the days of barren roadside views in Car Crash. Now, when you’re speeding down the streets, you’ll be flanked by towering buildings and small houses that give the city a vibrant skyline. At the moment the the buildings are bound the the different types of roads. I soon plan to make them appear random. Maybe I group them as well, so that sometimes there are various high office buildings alongside the road, and other times there are smaller houses and parks.

🎶 Tuning the Tunes

Every high-speed chase scene needs a gripping soundtrack, and that’s exactly why I’ve replaced the previous music with a new, adrenaline-pumping tune. This track will rev up the intensity of the game and keep your heart racing as you weave through traffic. The new music complements the gameplay perfectly, setting the stage for some epic driving moments. I thought the game could use a more 80s synthesizer Miami Vice type of music.

🖌️ Car

I decided to give the car of the player a more distinct color. So I opened the texture in Photoshop, changed the color to pink and added white stripes and flames to the car. Inspired by 70s hot rods.

🛣️ The Road Ahead

The next lesson in my course is about transitioning between scenes in Unity. So expect a nice transition between the menu and the game in the next update :)

But, there’s still plenty of other things to do as well. The city within Car Crash is slowly coming to life. Each update brings us closer to the finish line, and I can’t wait to share more of this journey with you. Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the keyboard!

Happy coding! 🚀
